Abstract

Delivering Active Transport in Lake Macquarie.

Fernleigh Track, Lake Macquarie City Council Cycling and Footpath Strategies.

Lake Macquarie Council has a strong history of delivering high quality shared pathways, and is committed to further expansion of these networks through the Lake Macquarie Cycle Ways Strategy, Footpath Strategy and the Active Transport Program.

The development and implementation of the Fernleigh Track has been a cornerstone project for Lake Macquarie City Council. The 15.5km shared pathway, jointly owned by LMCC and NCC, follows the disused rail corridor stretching between Adamstown and Belmont.  The Track’s popularity can be credited to its attractive bushland setting, well renowned rail heritage, and high quality design features.

Council has built on the momentum generated by the Fernleigh Track, and established a citywide strategic direction for footpaths and cycle ways.  The implementation of these strategies will be refined as we refocus and consider footpaths and cycle ways as elements of the active transport network.
